Nigeria Apiculture Platform
….. Developing Apiculture Value-chain for Sustainable Wealth!
Nigeria Apiculture Platform (NAP) is a National Apiculture Platform, amongst other 54 national platforms launched by member states across Africa under an apex continental Platform, called Africa Apiculture Platform (AAP). AAP was launched by the Africa Union-Bureau for Animal Research, (AU-IBAR) as part of a Bee Project and in collaboration with The European Union (EU).
This grant financed project tagged “Bee Project” which aimed to strengthen the Apicultural Bee sector across Africa and achieve:
- Protection for the bees in the region
- To improve the quality of bee products
- To improve pollination services through the reduction of incidences of Bee diseases and pests
- To enhance market access of Value chain products.
- To improve Bee Health in the regions among others.
NAP Since 2016
The EU and African Union
The EU has contributed a total of 13.1 Million Euro to the Bee Project.
This funding is shared as follows:
- 8 Million Euro to fund two Components being handled by AU-IBAR (Africa Union-Bureau for Animal Research),
- 3 million to fund another two strategic components to be handled by Icipe.
BENEFICIARIES
Direct Beneficiaries of the fund included:
- The Ministries in charge of Apiculture in the 54-member States of African Union
- The Regional Economic Communities: MA, COMESA, ECCAS, ECOWAS, CENSAD, IGAD and SADC
- Beekeepers Associations, Farmers and Local communities benefiting from the Beehive products, marketing and pollination services activities.
- National, regional and continental institutions and research centres involved in control of pollinators’ diseases and pests and other apiculture specific activities in Africa
