Developing Apiculture Value-chain for Sustainable Wealth!
Nigeria Apiculture Platform (NAP) is a National Apiculture Platform, amongst other 54 national platforms launched by member states across Africa under an apex continental Platform, called Africa Apiculture Platform (AAP). AAP was launched by the Africa Union-Bureau for Animal Research, (AU-IBAR) as part of a Bee Project and in collaboration with The European Union (EU).
This grant financed project tagged “Bee Project” which aimed to strengthen the Apicultural Bee sector across Africa and achieve:
- Protection for the bees in the region
- To improve the quality of bee products
- To improve pollination services through the reduction of incidences of Bee diseases and pests
- To enhance market access of Value chain products.
- To improve Bee Health in the regions among others.

DR ONJEWU SUNDAY SULEMAN – CHAIRMAN
Dr Onjewu Sunday is the Acting Chairman of Nigeria Apiculture Platform. His experiences stem from his work exposure at Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) that he joined in 1991. He rose through the ranks from being a Scientific Officer 1 to Deputy Director position from 1991 to 2018. While at the Raw Materials Research and Development Council he held various administrative positions which included Benue, Gombe and the Federal Capital Territory Coordinator. He was head of Divisions of Entrepreneurship and Paper and Pulp products. He chaired many Committees successfully. Notable among these Committees are strategic committee on honey and bee hives products, strategic committee on Shea-Butter development in Nigeria, Sugar beet development in Nigeria and was secretary Boosting the production of Agricultural Raw Materials for Industrial uses over five years.
Dr Onjewu holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Agricultural Risk and insurance, a master of science degree in Agriculture Extension and communication and a Doctorate degree in Agriculture Extension and Communication all from the University of Agriculture Makurdi Benue State. He has over twenty research publications to his credit. He is a member of many professional Associations and a fellow of Institute of Professional Industrialists and Management Development. As a part time business Dr Onjewu markets Nigeria Rice. He had also worked as Consultant to Japan International Cooperation (JICA) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of united Nations. He had attended several local and International conferences, seminars, Workshops and trainings including two times training at international centre for insect Ecology and physiology Nairobi Kenya on Beekeeping related disciplines. He was the desk officer for Apiculture program in Raw Materials Research and Development Council ( RMRDC) for over two decades. A member of Africa local organising Committee for Apiculture Expo 2018 in Nigeria. He served as the pioneer Secretary of National Apiculture Platform (NAP) and currently the Acting National Chairman for NAP.
David Musa
Mr. David Musa is the Public Relations Officer of NAP. He comes with extensive experience in the Apiculture value-chain. They include:
- Facilitating Instructor, National Open University of Nigeria, Jos Study Centre- January 2007 – January 2011 (Facilitating Instructor, Beekeeping proficiency Courses, Center for Continuing education & Workplace training)
- General Manager, Barg Natural Honey (Bargong farms Limited)- January 2012 till 2018
- Managing Consultant, POD of ECWA Beekeeping Demonstration learning Project; 2011- 2019
- (DANIDA) Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, Numan Nigeria,” Beekeeping as Sustainable Livelihood” 3-year Project-January 2008 till September 2010(TRAINING CONSULTANT)
- People Oriented Development of ECWA, Demonstration Farm (beekeeping component) February 2008 till date. (MANAGING LEASEHOLDER)
- THE BEE SAFARI (PROJECT INITIATOR AND FACILITATING COORDINATOR) – Collaboration with Plateau State Tourism Corporation on Academic resource excursions for Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Institutions on Apiculture Science and Beekeeping Bio-Technology at the Jos Wild Life Park (2008-date). 21 episodes achieved.
Obianuju Okpo CrNP – Financial Secretary
- She is an Apiculturist, the MD/CEO of Aku-Jofran Global Concepts Limited producers of Jofran Honey®, the Center Administrator of Center for Apiculture Research and Development of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a Nationally Licensed Business Development Service Provider (BDSP).
- Her experience in the apiculture sector spans over 25 years where her craftsmanship is evident in the testimonials of stakeholders that went through her programs. She is deeply involved in hands-on beekeeping and aspects of its associated value chain, and encourages the utilization of research findings in trainings, Apitherapy, honey processing and packaging for the sector participants.
- She has co-author 7 books and manuals in Apiculture and business development. She is also the Chairman, Jofran Beekeeping Cooperative for Women and Financial Secretary, Nigeria Apiculture Platform (NAP).
